Outlook for the Global Economy and Policy Priorities
The International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will raise the 2022 Fall Meetings curtain on Thursday, October 6, in an event hosted by Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia will introduce the conversation.
Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. All Georgetown community members will be asked to present their GU ID.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Kristalina Georgieva currently serves as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, a position she was selected for on September 25, 2019 and has served as since October 1, 2019. Before joining the IMF, Ms. Georgieva was CEO of the World Bank from January 2017 to September 2019, during which time she also served as Interim President of the World Bank Group for three months. Previously, Ms. Georgieva helped shape the agenda of the European Union while serving as European Commission Vice President for Budget and Human Resources. In this capacity she oversaw the EU’s €161 billion (US $175bn) budget and 33,000 staff, as well as the EU’s response to the Euro Area debt crisis and the 2015 refugee crisis. Before that, she was Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, managing one of the world’s largest humanitarian aid budgets.
Dr. Joel S. Hellman is the dean of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. As both a scholar and a practitioner, he brings to Georgetown a unique and valuable perspective from his work on issues of governance, conflict and the political economy of development around the world. Before he became dean of the School of Foreign Service in 2015, he served at the World Bank in many senior roles, including his last position as Chief Institutional Economist. Prior to that, he served as director of the World Bank’s Fragile and Conflict Affected States Department, based in Nairobi, Kenya. He also led the World Bank’s response to the devastating tsunami in Aceh, Indonesia. In addition to serving at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, Hellman was a faculty member in political science at both Columbia University and Harvard University. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia and an M.Phil. in Russian and East European studies from the University of Oxford. He received his B.A. from Williams College.
