Title: This is what college is for; finding your balance and finding yourself

Coming to Georgetown, you will likely feel a variety of emotions. You may be excited for a new environment and classes and friends. You may be scared of knowing whether you will be able to fit in. You may be anxious or nervous about whether you will be able to “make it” here. You may be all of the above.

Regardless, you will likely be ready to seek out all that Georgetown and DC have to offer and work toward your goals. While I entirely encourage you to do so, I also want to emphasize the need to find a balance in your life. Most Georgetown students will admit to getting over-involved or committed to activities, events, and people at some point in their times here. Often, you may find yourself comparing yourself to your peers and feeling like you are not doing enough, whether that be academically, extracurricularly, or socially.

Just keep in mind that nobody knows your life, your personal ambitions, interests and limits better than yourself. You will find yourself toying and trying to figure out these things, as well. Just remember that your overall well-being is what is truly important, and you should be pursuing things that are satisfying to you.

It’s okay to watch a movie instead of going out to a party on a Saturday night. It’s okay to go to bed early and get some sleep instead of feeling like you ought to be more involved in activities or clubs or internships. It’s okay to not have a girlfriend or boyfriend. It’s okay to not know what you are doing with your career path. It’s okay to feel completely lost, and it’s certainly okay to ask for help (in fact, I advise it). This is what college is for; finding your balance and finding yourself.
