Title: Commute Incentives: Smart Benefits, Carpooling, and more

Dear Georgetown University Community Members,

Fall is right around the corner and as the leaves change, so might your commuting options. Below, we’ve listed commute resources provided by the Office of Transportation Management to help get you where you need to go around our campuses and the greater DC Metro area.

Save with GU’s SmartBenefits Commuter Program

Georgetown employees can put pre-tax dollars towards their Metrobus and Metrorail rides as part of GU’s SmartBenefits Commuter Program, saving you up to $1,200 per year. After enrolling, the funds will be available on your SmarTrip card at the start of each month and any unused benefits will be rolled over to the next month.

To enroll, waive, or make changes to your SmartBenefits, complete the SmartBenefits Transit Payroll Deduction form. Changes are only permitted once per year. Note that employees cannot be enrolled in both SmartBenefits and university parking at the same time. Find out more about the transit options you can use this benefit for below.

Cut Parking Costs with Carpool

Looking for other people to ride with so you can breeze through the Express Lanes, avoid tolls, and split parking fees? Carpools and vanpools offer convenience, reduce time in traffic, and save money. Plus, Georgetown employees who carpool receive discounted parking fees, which could amount to more than $200 per month in savings.

To find a carpool partner, register with Commuter Connections. When you start your new carpool, you’ll also be eligible to receive up to $130 through their program, ‘Pool Rewards, and sign up for Guaranteed Ride Home to ensure you have a way to commute home in case of unexpected emergencies or overtime.

Hop On a Bus or Take Metro

Metrobus

Several public buses also serve Georgetown University, Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and the Hilltop and Capitol Campus neighborhoods. You can find Metrobus timetables online or check BusETA to see when the next bus is arriving near you.

DC Circulator

The Rosslyn – Dupont DC Circulator route is being phased out on October 1, 2024. The Georgetown – Union Station route will continue service until December 31, 2024.

While the DC Circulator will be phased out, there is new bus service proposed for 2025 that will replace the current routes. You can view the proposed 2025 BetterBus network here and more information on how WMATA is supporting the transition here. The routes proposed that are most relevant to our community include D82, D92, D94, D96.
