Hilltop Campus Groups

(Open to Students From All Campuses)

Unless otherwise stated, group days, times, and formats (virtual or in-person) will be determined by group facilitators after meeting with interested participants. Some groups may require group screening. Please contact the group facilitators for more details. For in-person groups and workshops at CAPS, please follow the directions below.

These groups are open to all Georgetown students regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic protected under University policy.

Reservoir Road to CAPS: Throughout the remainder of the Henle Village construction project, pedestrians can enter through Pedestrian Entrance 00 on Reservoir Road NW, to the East of St. Mary’s and Darnall Halls to lead to the CAPS. Please note: Off-campus students (including graduate students) who don’t have access to residence halls need to enter via Reservoir Road.

Hilltop Campus to CAPS: Proceed down Tondorf Road toward Darnall Hall which is just before Epicurean. Gain entrance to Darnall Hall with a GoCard, head to the mezzanine level and exit, turning left toward the CAPS main door. Please note: Off-campus students (including graduate students) who don’t have access to residence halls need to enter via Reservoir Road.

Understanding Self and Others Group
Graduate and Undergraduate Student Group

These insight-oriented groups provide a safe environment for exploring yourself and interpersonal style in areas such as trust, intimacy, anger, assertiveness, taking risks, and dealing with authority. Survivors Support Group
Facilitators: Minu Mathew, LICSW and Alex Huss, LCSW
In-person, Bi-weekly, Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This group is intended to create community and support survivors of interpersonal violence (sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and childhood sexual abuse) who are seeking to connect with others with similar experiences and gain insight into the ways trauma continues to affect them. This group will focus on the impact of traumatic experiences, the use of coping skills in managing symptoms, and the connection of survivors in order to decrease isolation and promote personal empowerment. Group will begin with a brief mindfulness exercise followed by an open format depending on the group’s interests. This group is open to students of all genders and identities. This support space is designed for international students (graduate and undergraduate) at Georgetown University. The group will be held virtually and on a biweekly basis with no prior screening required. The purpose of the group is to provide members with a safe and supportive environment to share their stories, experiences, challenges and successes in navigating various systems and cross-cultural transitions as an international student at Georgetown University and in the U.S. You do not need to register for this group. Queer Support Space

The group aims to provide a safe and confidential place for those looking to discuss topics like identity development, coming out, relationships, family dynamics and community/university concerns unique to queer students. Coping with Loss

This is a group for students who have experienced the loss of a family member, loved one or acquaintance, recently or unresolved from the past. It is designed to provide a confidential and supportive place to express and process feelings around coping with major losses and to provide support for adapting to new ways to build meaning after loss. Body Image and Eating Concerns Support Group

The Body Image and Eating Disorder Support Group will provide a safe and supportive space for students to discuss and address their challenges related to body image and eating disorders as they navigate campus life. Together, we will share personal experiences, develop practical coping strategies and foster self-acceptance through group discussions, skill-building exercises, nutrition education and peer support. Back on the Hilltop Support Group

Biweekly, Thursdays at 2-3 p.m., Anticipated Start Date: 9/26/24, Virtual
This group is designed for college students returning from a medical leave of absence, offering a safe and supportive environment to navigate the transition back to campus life. We will address and problem-solve challenges related to mental health, academics and social reintegration through guided discussions, skill-building practices and peer support. Group members will engage in activities centered around time management, mindfulness, stress management and more to build resilience and ensure success in their return to Georgetown. To register, please email jk2453@georgetown.edu

Mosaic

Biweekly, Thursdays at 2-3 p.m., Anticipated start date: 10/3/24, In-Person

This group is an affinity space focused on Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC)-identifying students to cultivate strength through solidarity and connection. Mosaic provides a place for group members to discuss issues unique to their experience at a predominantly white institution (PWI), including academic stress, relationships, race/ethnicity related stress, cultural values and navigating cultural expectations, values exploration, family dynamics, identity development, building resilience, self-care and community care, among other topics. Medical Center Groups

School of Medicine Process Group

This is a drop-in support group intended for students in the School of Medicine. It meets once a month and is designed to provide a safe space for students to process their experiences as they navigate medical school. BGE Process Group

This is a drop-in support group intended for students in the Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) programs. It meets once a month in the evening and is designed to provide a safe space for students to process their experiences as they navigate graduate school and prepare for a career in the STEM field. Athletics Groups

Injury Recovery Enhancement Group
Facilitator: Erica Force, Ph.D., LP, CMPC
Tuesdays at 5:00 p.m., Starting in October
This group offers space for student-athletes in any stage of injury recovery seeking support as they cope with sport-related injury, and the challenges of being away from their sport during recovery. The focus will be on supporting student-athletes through wellness and connection. The group will offer a space for connection with peers while supporting student-athletes with identifying goals for injury rehabilitation, rebuilding and maintaining motivation, applying stress management techniques and feeling more prepared to return to sport, or in some cases, prepared to transition out of sport. More Than a Game: A Black Student-Athlete Support Group

This group offers a space for authentic discussions around Black student-athlete experiences on the Hilltop Campus. Centering the narratives of Black student athletes on the Hilltop, the biweekly “More Than a Game” group strives to offer an honest and transparent space for authentic discussions around their unique student experiences on the Hilltop. Interpersonal Mindfulness (In-Person)

This group is designed for law students who are interested in using mindfulness to increase self-acceptance and relate more comfortably to others. Sample topics include working with social anxiety, self-critical thoughts, mindful communication and present-centered awareness. This therapy group is designed for both undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in using mindfulness to increase self-acceptance and relate more to others. Mindful Mood Management Workshop Series

This workshop series is designed for law students who are interested in exploring how mindfulness can be used to support mental wellness. Each month starting in September, CAPS will introduce different ways to incorporate mindfulness into students’ lives. September’s workshops will focus on introducing students to the concept of mindfulness and different mindful practices. October’s workshops will explore how students can improve their relationship with their emotions through a mindfulness lens. November’s workshops will identify different skills that can help students manage distress mindfully when final exam preparations begin. While attending all three workshops in the series is encouraged, attending all three is not required to participate in this program. Please note: All CAPS workshops will be held in-person at the Hilltop Campus CAPS office, located in Darnall Hall. These are all single-session, drop-in meetings – you do not need to attend on all dates and registration is not required! ADHD Psychoeducation Workshop
Time: 2-3 p.m.

This workshop provides psychoeducation around ADHD, factors that affect attention and new strategies to help optimize their attention in a range of situations. Participants do not need a formal ADHD diagnosis to attend this workshop – all students are welcome to attend.

Anxiety Toolbox
Time: 2-3 p.m.

This workshop focuses on helping you understand anxiety symptoms and build skills to manage these symptoms. Sample topics include: understanding anxiety, unhelpful thinking styles and recognizing anxiety triggers.

Mindful Mood Management

This workshop offers skills to handle stress, navigate difficult emotions and cultivate self-reflection. Participants will engage in guided, experiential exercises, with an emphasis on mindfulness and distress tolerance. Prior experience with mindfulness or meditation is welcome, but not a requirement for participation.

Depression Toolbox
Time: 2-3 p.m.

This workshop is designed to help you understand depressive symptoms and build skills to manage these symptoms. Sample topics include understanding depression, unhelpful thinking styles and managing mood.

Stress Management Toolbox
