Title: My DC Bucket List As A Soon-to-be Graduating Senior

Author: Alex Johnson (C'25)
Date Published: October 8, 2024

Alex is a Georgetown Storyteller and a senior in the College of Arts & Sciences, where he is majoring in government and minoring in religion, ethics, and world affairs.

One thing that has been clear during my time at Georgetown is that four years can go by fast. With only one more year left at Georgetown, there are so many things that my freshman self would be disappointed that I haven’t done yet. So, to hold myself accountable and tell you about some of the best things and places DC has to offer, I’ve decided to share my senior year bucket list with you!

Kayaking in the Potomac

Ever since I toured Georgetown in spring 2021, I’ve wanted to rent a kayak from the Key Bridge Boathouse and make my way down the Potomac. Nothing is better than getting out on the water on a sunny DC day, and there is no better way to do it than kayaking in the Potomac. I haven’t managed to do it yet, but I know I need to do it before I graduate!

Day Trip to Annapolis

Calling all crab lovers… the capital city of Maryland, Annapolis, is known for its incredible seafood, and it’s less than an hour away from Georgetown! Annapolis is a quaint and historic town on the Chesapeake Bay, perfect for exploring art galleries, bookstores and coffee shops. Even better, it’s a great place to eat fresh Maryland crab (and other seafood). I went once years ago, and I’ve wanted to make it back ever since.

Hiking in Shenandoah National Park

I love going to school in a city, but sometimes I just need a little nature. Luckily, DC is surrounded by gorgeous mountains and peaceful forests. Shenandoah National Park is just an hour outside of DC, so it’s an easy way to escape the city and touch some grass. When my quest for a job post-graduation gets stressful, I know I’ll be grateful for the mountain air.

Dumbarton Oaks

I’m a little embarrassed about this one, but I still haven’t been to Dumbarton Oaks. Yes, I know it’s in Georgetown, but I still somehow haven’t found the time to walk over yet. Dumbarton Oaks is a historic estate in Georgetown, with beautiful gardens and impressive architecture. And for history and international relations enthusiasts, it was the sight of the Dumbarton Oaks Conference, where the proposals for the establishment of the United Nations were introduced and negotiated. It’s a historic and cultural gem right in the heart of Georgetown, so it’s about time I make the (short) trek over.

Try One of DC’s Michelin-Starred Restaurants

One of my favorite things about DC is the impressive amount of high-quality restaurants and bars. No matter what cuisine or atmosphere you’re feeling, there is always something for you. I am proud to say that I’ve done my best to explore DC’s culinary scene, but I still haven’t made it to one of DC’s many Michelin-starred restaurants. With Elcielo, Albi, Rania, Jônt, and so many more, I think it’s about time that I try at least one. Trying so many of DC’s restaurants and bars has been one of my favorite things to do with friends, so it’s only natural that I end my time here with the best of the best. I’ll start saving up now.

My senior year will be full of goodbyes, but it can also be full of new experiences. I have loved my time at Georgetown, and the best way to honor it is to make sure that I make the most of it. I hope that checking some of these items off my bucket list helps me to do that!
