Title: Georgetown, London School of Economics Launch Joint Research and Education Partnership

Georgetown has partnered with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to fund joint research projects between researchers at the two institutions and support collaborative educational programming.

The partnership came about from both institutions’ shared commitment to address key global challenges by engaging with policy and international organizations in Washington, DC, and London. The joint effort will leverage both institutions’ reputations and locations to generate innovative collaborations between faculty at both universities in a range of topics, including sustainability, political economy, democracy and artificial intelligence.

“Georgetown is excited to partner with the London School of Economics and provide this opportunity for our faculty to collaborate across disciplines and institutions,” said Georgetown Interim President Robert M. Groves. “We are eager to see the impact of these collaborative endeavors as our researchers tackle global challenges to serve the common good. This is an important new step in the long relationship between LSE and Georgetown.”

Under the agreement, researchers from Georgetown are encouraged to partner with LSE researchers and vice versa on projects that leverage complementary research strengths and interests. The partnership will also support the development of collaborative pedagogical and student exchange programs.

Applications will be considered by a joint faculty committee. Applicants can receive up to £10,000 from each institution for a total of up to £20,000, or approximately $25,800. The joint research partnerships can use the funds to support research projects, workshops, conferences and short-term research visits.

Applications for funding will open later this spring for projects that will be completed by summer 2026. Up to 10 applications will be funded under the pilot scheme, with projects expected to start no later than August 2025.

Georgetown’s partnership with LSE continues the university’s long history of high-level research.

In February, Georgetown announced it retained its status as an R1 institution designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education for “very high research activity.” The achievement marks the 30th year Georgetown has achieved R1 status, which was awarded to 187 doctoral universities in 2025.

The partnership with LSE is just one of multiple agreements between Georgetown and other academic institutions.
