We may live in the city, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t great places to hike just right outside your door.
Theodore Roosevelt Island
Nestled between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom on the Potomac, Theodore Roosevelt Island can be accessed through a pedestrian bridge near the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Look out for a statue of the 26th President of the United States during your hike. And if you’re feeling adventurous, from there you can access the Mount Vernon Trail, a 19-mile stretch that meanders south to George Washington’s famed estate.
Potomac Heritage Trail
Fancy a stroll to Virginia? Walk across the Francis Scott Key Bridge and you’ll come upon the Potomac Heritage Trail. Tracing along the Potomac River on the Virginia side, this easy walk grants you picturesque views of Georgetown University.
Capital Crescent Trail
Right next to the Potomac Boat Club on the Georgetown Waterfront lies the trailhead for the Capital Crescent Trail. Great for bicyclists, this seven mile trail was transformed from its days as an old rail line. Hop on your bike for a leisurely ride to nearby Bethesda, Maryland.
Dumbarton Oaks Park
Formerly part of the Dumbarton Oaks estate, this 27-acre park just off Wisconsin Ave is a can’t-miss landscape right here in Georgetown. Start from Lovers’ Lane on R street and 31st Street NW, then head north on the nearly mile-long Dumbarton Oaks Path, and you’ll find yourself at the gateway for further hiking opportunities, including the massive Rock Creek Park.
