Georgetown’s performing arts department and the president’s office will celebrate the Christmas season with the release of a new album today that features the university’s a cappella student groups.
The university’s performing arts department and president’s office will celebrate the Christmas season with the release of a new album today featuring holiday classics sung by the university’s a cappella student groups.
The Georgetown GraceNotes, The Georgetown Saxatones, Georgetown University Chamber Singers, The Georgetown Phantoms, The Georgetown Chimes, Harmony and Georgetown Superfood all lent their voices to Joy To The World: Holiday A Cappella Vocal Music, Georgetown University 2013.
Proceeds from the album will go toward Georgetown’s 1789 Scholarship Imperative, an effort to annually fund 1,789 undergraduate scholarships through philanthropy by 2016 and help keep the university accessible and affordable for eligible students.
Spirited Voices
“It’s a terrific album that captures the spirit for what it was intended,” says Ronald Lignelli, administrative director for the performing arts department, which is part of Georgetown College. “I think alumni around the world and members of the university community will enjoy the spirit conveyed by the student voices.”
The album or individual tracks may be downloaded from Loudr! and iTunes.
“Loudr! allows patrons to contribute more than the face value of the album cost and also allows Georgetown to keep more of the proceeds than what iTunes offers after sales,” Lignelli says.
Many of the songs from the album – “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Jingle Bells,” “Sleigh Ride,” “Carol of the Bells” and more – will be performed by the a cappella groups during Georgetown’s annual tree lighting on Dec. 6.
Remarkable Talent
The album project, sponsored by the Office of the President, is the result of hard work and dedication of students, faculty and staff, says Lignelli.
He began work on the album project in February and has served as master of ceremonies for the university’s annual tree lighting for the past 29 years.
The Saxatones, Phantoms and Gracenotes are among the a cappella student groups who already have recorded albums of their work, but this marks the first holiday album the groups have made together.
“I’m thoroughly glad that we got the chance to do this,” Lignelli says. “The students displayed remarkable talent and did an excellent job.”
