Title: Historic Fundraising Campaign Reaches $1 Billion Milestone
A gift from a young alumna has helped Georgetown achieve a major milestone in its historic, 10-year fundraising campaign – reaching the $1 billion mark of the $1.5 billion goal.
“When we began this campaign a few years ago, we were embarking on the most ambitious fundraising effort in Georgetown’s history,” President John J. DeGioia said. “I’m deeply grateful to all the alumni, students, family and friends who share in our vision and mission, and who have contributed to our campaign’s success.”
The alumna who helped Georgetown reach the $1 billion mark will be featured in the May issue of Georgetown Magazine.
Campaign Accomplishments
In making her contribution, she joined 86,161 others in supporting For Generations to Come: The Campaign for Georgetown.
Reaching the $1 billion mark is already having an effect on Georgetown’s main, medical and law campuses. Here are just a few of the campaign’s accomplishments:
Numerous university-wide new scholarships, endowed chairs and professorships have been created through campaign donations.
Regents Hall, Georgetown’s state-of-the-art science center, opened its doors in the fall.
Georgetown launched the Environment Initiative as a university-wide effort to advance the interdisciplinary study of the environment.
The work of the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs and the Doyle Program on Engaging Difference was advanced through major gifts.
GUMC established the Center for Brain Plasticity and Repair, in collaboration with MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, to apply new approaches to the treatment of brain injury resulting from stroke.
The medical center also launched the Initiative to Reduce Health Disparities to reduce cancer disparities among minority and underserved communities in the nation’s capital.
The O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law was established at the Law Center to respond to the need for innovative solutions to the most pressing national and international health concerns.
The new Georgetown Climate Center on the Law Center campus has become a leading resource for state and federal policy affecting climate, energy and transportation.
This month, the much-admired rose window in Dahlgren Chapel was seen for the first time since 2007. The window, removed for safekeeping when structural issues surfaced, as well as the rest of the stained glass windows were recently reinstalled as part of a multiyear renovation.
Looking Ahead
I’m deeply grateful to all the alumni, students, family and friends who share in our vision and mission, and who have contributed to our campaign’s success.”
—John J. DeGioia, Georgetown University President
“Our biggest single priority is meeting our ambitious $500 million fundraising goal for financial aid and scholarship support for Georgetown’s students,” said R. Bartley Moore (F’87), vice president for advancement. “Our momentum has built steadily since late 2009 when we launched the 1789 Scholarship Imperative as part of this effort. Its success will ensure that we can continue to meet the full demonstrated need of every student admitted and permit the very best to choose Georgetown – even if their families are unable to afford the full cost of attendance.”
By the end of 2013, the university expects to have begun transforming part of New South into the Healey Family Student Center and to have dedicated the new off-campus retreat facility, the Calcagnini Contemplative Center.
Although the campaign launched publicly in October 2011, the quiet phase of the effort began in July 2006 with gifts from Georgetown’s philanthropic leadership.
“This is a campaign that is exceeding our expectations – despite the economic downturn that began in 2007 and the lingering uncertainty of the recovery,” Moore said. “We are very proud of all we have accomplished, even as we remain focused on the remaining work of the campaign. Our biggest remaining capital project is the $60 million Intercollegiate Athletics Center, and we’re only a third of the way there.”
The campaign is expected to run until July 2016.
