Title: Georgetown Welcomes New Chief of Public Safety
A new police chief with 25 years of experience at the University of Maryland – Jay Gruber – joined the Georgetown community July 30.
Jay Gruber
Gruber previously served as assistant director of public safety and assistant chief of police at Maryland, where he was involved in all aspects of law enforcement, including significant work in community policing and crime prevention.
He is also a nationally recognized expert on emergency management and communication on college campuses.
A trained emergency medical technician,Gruber holds two degrees from the University of Maryland – a bachelor’s in law enforcement and a master’s in applied management, as well as a graduate certificate in homeland security management.
He is also a Federal Bureau of Investigation Police Executive Fellow.
Joseph Smith, associate director of public safety, had served as interim chief prior to Gruber’s appointment.
