The community of Georgetown comprises individuals who come from all walks of life. To help each one succeed, it is important to have good mental health resources. Georgetown is a fount of resources through the various academic programs and individual expertise available. Availing of the resources within the community reinforces not only the care of the whole person, but the care of the whole community.
As one of the facilitators of the Lawyers in Balance Program, I lead a weekly meditation session for Georgetown Law staff. Having a quiet space as a resource allows one to escape from daily activities so they may realign their body, mind and spirit for even just a few minutes. Feeling centered, one would be able to go about their day with awareness.
The pandemic was a way of nature telling us human beings that it needed a break from the damage we had done to it. In order for nature to heal, we were forced to stay home. Being home gave us the time for self-reflection, a review of our values. The pandemic also opened up the wound of social justice – a wound that just cannot heal. For this reason, it is most important that Georgetown offers the resources to help heal this wound, especially for those most affected and those who continue to carry this generational wound in their hearts.
