Utilities Work Impacts to Healy Lawn, Copley Lawn and East Campus

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

Starting on Monday, September 12, 2022, Georgetown’s energy partner, ENGIE, will dig small holes above our current utilities infrastructure in several locations on and near Healy Lawn and Copley Lawn, and in the neighborhood outside the front gates near East Campus (e.g., Alumni Square, Walsh). This project is in preparation for utilities infrastructure upgrades that will occur next year.

Planned work will take place over approximately 3-4 weeks and consist of two “vacuum trucks” extracting soil from 2’x2’ holes to confirm utility line locations. Each hole will then be refilled and restored within the same day of work.

Work is expected to begin near East Campus on Monday, September 12, and on Healy Lawn and Copley Lawn on Thursday, September 15.

Please note the following:

  • Work Hours: This work will occur intermittently over the next few weeks Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. near student residences (e.g., Copley Hall & Alumni Square) and 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. in other locations.
  • Safety: Personnel will be on site during all work times to guide pedestrians and vehicles safely around this work.
  • Traffic Impacts: At this time, there are no road closures anticipated, but vehicular traffic on 37th, 36th, O and N Streets should expect delays and will be guided by flaggers. The G2 bus will continue to run its normal route and schedule.
  • Noise Reduction: Noise-reduction methods will be in place throughout work, and noise will be actively monitored to keep within acceptable limits.
  • Events/Activities: The Office of Planning & Facilities Management has been working closely with the Office of the University Registrar, Office of Protocol & Events and Georgetown Event Management Services to coordinate scheduling of work with major planned events and activities, recognizing that our campus community is active at all times of the day.
