ECo Talks: The Contribution of Afrocentric Ecological Wisdom in Addressing the Climate Crisis with Barwendé M. Sané
Dr. Barwendé Médard Sané, postdoctoral researcher at Georgetown University’s Environmental Justice Program, will present his talk, “The Contribution of Afrocentric Ecological Wisdom in Addressing the Climate Crisis,” as part of the ECo Talks series produced by the Earth Commons.
About the Speaker: Dr. Barwendé Médard Sané, SJ, Ed.D. contributes to Georgetown University’s Environmental Justice Program, blending Afrocentric epistemologies with environmental justice principles to advocate for peace rooted in African values, ecology, and Catholic teachings. He examines how Afrocentric ecologists promote human dignity and the common good within sustainable frameworks, critiquing science’s limited approach to the impact of climate change on marginalized communities. Co-founder of L’Institut de Recherches sur la Paix au Sahel in 2022, Sané authored 7 books on Pan-Africanism, human rights, and peacebuilding, including “Réaliser les droits humains avec Martin Luther King, Jr” (L’Harmattan, 2014) and “Manuel d’éducation à la paix en Afrique” (L’Harmattan, 2020).
About the Talk: This seminar explores how Afrocentric ecological wisdom provides unique perspectives and insights crucial for tackling the climate crisis. By examining viewpoints such as Yacouba Sawadogo’s interpretation of the crisis as a manifestation of human crisis within the “Zamane,” the role of Southern epistemologies in framing climate understanding, and the significance of qualitative research in African contexts, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how integrating diverse perspectives can enhance sustainability efforts.
Event Details: Light refreshments will be provided. Free and open to all. No RSVP required. In person and online event Zoom ID 93082466514.
