About the Speaker:
Dr. Mohammad N. Islam is an Associate Research Scientist in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine at Columbia University in New York. With an MS and PhD from St. John’s University, Dr. Islam is interested in defining the underlying mechanisms regulating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He is trained in live-lung optical imaging techniques, allowing him to study cellular calcium signaling, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and genetic regulation within intact mouse and human alveoli and microvessels. His research on bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) showed mitochondrial transfer from BMSCs to alveolar epithelial cells, increasing alveolar ATP and ameliorating ARDS. His current research explores the interactions between SARS-CoV2 and the alveolar epithelium, as well as the endothelial dysfunction that results from gram-negative bacteremia.
