Title & Abstract:
“The Intersection of the Role of Pathology In the COVID-19 Pandemic”
The COVID-19 Pandemic has demonstrated the complexity of preparing for a widespread outbreak of a poorly understood viral pathogen. Despite the advances of molecular biology, elucidating the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 remains a work in progress. Previous instances of pathogenic coronavirus (SARS & MERS) provided limited experience on which to anticipate the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Early emphasis was on the histopathology of COVID-19, however as the Pandemic progressed, the focus has moved to the challenges of viral cell tropism and persistence. The overlay of Long COVID and ongoing viral evolution has emphasized the importance of viral life cycle and how it impacts health.
