Digitizing Segregation: How Charter School Websites Signal Race- and Class-Specific Educational Ideologies
Jaren Haber, postdoctoral fellow at the Massive Data Institute, presents research examining why charter schools are more segregated by race and class than traditional public schools. “I theorize that charter schools differentially signal race- and class-based identities, which encourages parents and schools to sort into homogenous groups. I used web-crawling and text analysis to develop a fine-grained, linguistic signal of educational culture; I deployed this measure using statistical models and behavioral experiments. Findings thus far suggest a relationship between charter school identities and race- and class-based segregation,” says Haber. Find out more at this event.
