Please join us for a panel discussion thinking through the political histories of resistance and solidarity across the Indian Ocean World, featuring Prof. Suneil Sanzgiri (Pratt Institute and director of Two Refusals), Prof. Kalyani Ramnath (Columbia University and author of Boats in a Storm), and Prof. Quito Swan (George Washington University and author of Pasifika Black). The panel and discussion will be moderated by Professor Kwame Otu.
About the Panel:
Suneil Sanzgiri is an artist, researcher, and filmmaker. His work spans experimental video and film, animations, essays, and installations, and contends with questions of identity, heritage, culture and diaspora in relation to structural violence. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a Masters of Science in Art, Culture and Technology in 2017.
Kalyani Ramnath is a historian of modern South Asia, with research and teaching interests in legal history, histories of migration and displacement, transnational history, and questions of archival method. It will look at the role of legal fictions in enclosing maritime space in the Indian Ocean and its impact on, and relationship with, coastal communities.

A public facing scholar of Black internationalism and the African Diaspora, he has single authored three books—Pasifika Black: Oceania, Anti-Colonialism and the African World, Pauulu’s Diaspora: Black Internationalism and Environmental Justice, and Black Power in Bermuda: The Struggle for Decolonization.
