Keep Eyes on Sudan: Regional Dynamics of the War in Sudan
Join the Georgetown African Studies Program, the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, the Georgetown Conflict Resolution Program, the Gender+ Justice Initiative and Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security for the fourth event in a series of programming on Sudan.
This roundtable will explore the regional dynamics influencing the War in Sudan, focusing on the historical and contemporary roles of neighboring countries, regional communities, and global actors. Discussion will include the impact of small arms, international funding, and geopolitical rivalries on the conflict.
Ian Barnes
Nisrin Elamin is currently an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Toronto. She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Stanford University in 2020. She is currently writing a book tentatively titled: Stratified Enclosures: Land, Capital and Empire-making in central Sudan which focuses on Saudi and Emirati land grabs and community resistance to land dispossession in the Gezira region of Sudan. In addition to scholarly articles, Nisrin has also published several op-eds for Al Jazeera, the Washington Post, Okay Africa, and the Cultural Anthropology Hot Spot Series. Before pursuing her Ph.D., Nisrin spent over a decade working as an educator, community organizer and researcher in the US and Tanzania.
Nour Khalil is a researcher and consultant on migration policies, border violations and refugee issues. He is the co-founder and executive director of the Refugees Platform in Egypt. His policy work focuses on immigration and refugees, as well as border violations. He has considerable experience in the development field and as a rights defender, providing legal consultations, and documenting human rights violations in Egypt and beyond. As a journalist, Khalil published analytical and investigative pieces in The New Humanitarian and Ida2at. He is currently operating from exile after Egyptian authorities targeted him with imprisonment, freezing of assets and a travel ban. Khalil holds a degree in law and Islamic jurisprudence from Al Azhar University.
