ECo Talks: Blowing the Whistle on International Climate Corruption with Steve Kohn
Steve Kohn, attorney, author, and activist, will present his talk, ” Blowing the Whistle on International Climate Corruption,” as part of the new Earth Commons series produced by the Earth Commons.
About the Speaker: Mr. Stephen M. Kohn is an attorney, author, and activist. As the Founding Partner of Kohn, Kohn & Colapinto, LLP, Kohn is one of the nation’s premier whistleblower attorneys. With nearly 40 years of experience in the field, Kohn has won landmark decisions, generating widespread recognition for the vital role of whistleblowers in protecting democratic institutions. He is also the most prolific author on whistleblower law in the world, having published ten books on whistleblower law, including his newest, Rules for Whistleblowers: A Handbook for Doing What’s Right. As the Chairman of the Board of the National Whistleblower Center, Kohn has been at the forefront of developing rights for both domestic and international whistleblowers, including by drafting key whistleblower legislation and conducting anti-corruption workshops for dozens of countries. His legal, literary, and legislative efforts have distinguished him as a leader in qui tam law, securities fraud, foreign corruption, money laundering, and ESG violations, among other fields.
About the Talk: The fight against corruption is at the heart of the fight to protect the environment. U.S. whistleblower protection and reward programs, which have transnational applications, have proved to be an extraordinarily effective tool for holding to account corrupt actors responsible for environmental damage. Whistleblower law has powerful implications for illegal deforestation, wildlife trafficking, emissions fraud, and other climate crimes. This seminar will provide an overview for the ways in which existing whistleblower laws have been and can be used to combat climate corruption. It will also introduce audience members to legislation and agency-rules currently under consideration, which seek to strengthen the government’s capacity to punish fraudulent acts that have environmental consequences.
