ECo Talks: Light and Vision in the Ocean with Tom Iwanicki
Earth Commons postdoctoral fellow, Tom Iwanicki, will present his talk, ” Light and Vision in the Ocean,” as part of the new ECo Talks series produced by the Earth Commons.
About the Speaker: Dr. Iwanicki is a postdoctoral fellow at The Earth Commons studying visual ecology in the neustonic zone, or the ocean’s surface. His work investigates the physical properties of light at the sea surface and how animals use light to hunt or hide to survive in this vast and extreme zone of the ocean.
About the Talk: Dr. Iwanicki will discuss the visual landscape of the open ocean, from the bright, turbulent sea surface to a deep dive into the twilight zone and beyond. Light is among the most reliable signals across vast distances in the open ocean, and animals have evolved a remarkable diversity of tactics to both detect and produce light.
Event Details: Light refreshments will be provided. Free and open to all. No RSVP required.
About the Series: ECo Talks are presented by the Earth Commons Fridays 11:30 am – 12:30 pm in Arrupe Hall Conference Room. ECo Talks features scholars, leaders and innovators sparking conversation, sharing knowledge, and spurring change. Learn more about the series >>
