Title: 3 Seniors Look Back on Their Years With Jack the Bulldog

For 20 years, Hoyas have been taking care of Georgetown’s official mascot, Jack the Bulldog.

Students on Georgetown’s Jack Crew take the 60-pound bulldog on daily walks and escort him to on- and off-campus events, where he’s ridden a remote-controlled car at basketball games and sat in the bleachers at Nationals Park.

“Seeing our community through his eyes has been so unique,” says Shirley Hu (SFS’22), a Jack Crew member. “From cheering on so many different Georgetown sports teams to attending countless events in every corner of campus and meeting past, current and future Hoyas, Jack has represented everything that makes Georgetown special to me.”

After hundreds of hours and 200+ events, three seniors on the Jack Crew detail their favorite memories and hang-out spots with Jack — and the campus pride they’ve discovered along the way.

“Being a facet of the endless joy Jack provides is an incredible opportunity at Georgetown.”

Why did you join Jack Crew?

When I was 10 years old, I met a Georgetown student who explained there was a bulldog mascot that lived on campus. She said that if Jack came to your class and barked, then the professor had to cancel the remainder of class. This story encompassed everything I wanted in a college community — the lightheartedness and fun of having a live mascot and a whole school that rallies behind him. I knew I needed to be a part of it.

Ten years later, when I joined the Jack Crew, I was granted this incredible opportunity to provide others with the same amount of joy this pup has given me.

What has Jack Crew been like?

Being a member of Jack Crew has allowed me to participate in countless events both on and off campus. Most recently, we had the opportunity to visit Nat’s Park and walk on the field before the game. As I walked onto the field, a familiar feeling of awe came over me — awe that is always associated with Jack. Not only was it a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but a reminder of how special Jack the Bulldog is beyond the Georgetown community. Being a facet of the endless joy Jack provides is an incredible opportunity and privilege at Georgetown.

Favorite hangout spot with Jack:

Dahlgren Courtyard. Jack loves sniffing around the fountain and greeting people as they come and go.

“Taking care of Jack has been like a little piece of home.”

Why did you join Jack Crew?

After seeing and meeting Jack around campus many times prior to junior year, I decided to join the crew. I have grown up with bulldogs my entire life, and being able to take care of Jack has been like a little piece of home. I also love being able to make someone’s day a little brighter when they get to interact with jack around campus.

What has Jack Crew been like?

Being a part of Jack Crew has given me the opportunity to meet so many students, staff and members of the DC community. Walking around campus and attending events has allowed me to share how much I love Jack the Bulldog and also hear how he has impacted individuals on campus. The Crew itself has been amazing and brought so many individuals together who all have something in common: Jack!

“Jack has represented everything that makes Georgetown special to me.”

Why did you join Jack Crew?

I originally wanted to join Jack Crew because seeing Jack on my walk to class was always the highlight of my day as a new Hoya. As my friends know, I’m a huge dog person, and when I saw the application to join circulating on social media, I knew I couldn’t turn down the chance to spend time with such a special pup.

Favorite Jack Crew memory:

Attending Jack’s first baseball game last year. We drove out to a stadium in Maryland on a beautiful spring day and Jack was so excited to be in a new place. Once we arrived, we were greeted by an elated crew of Hoya parents who were thrilled to see him and lavished Jack with so much affection even before walking onto the baseball field.

After snapping some pictures with team members and walking around the concourse to greet some more fans, we watched the baseball game with Jack sitting up in the chairs with us. I never take for granted the way that Jack can bring such joy to so many different people wherever he is, and this day really exemplified that for me.

Jack has represented everything that makes Georgetown special to me.

What has Jack Crew been like?

Jack Crew has become such a defining part of my Georgetown experience. Seeing our community through his eyes has been so unique, from cheering on so many different Georgetown sports teams to attending countless events in every corner of campus and meeting past, current and future Hoyas, Jack has represented everything that makes Georgetown special to me. Being on Jack Crew has also given me the chance to spend time with Jack when he’s just being a most lovable, ordinary dog — running after toys, greeting you with adorable tail wags when you walk in the door, smelling the flowers on his daily walks, etc.

Favorite hangout spot with Jack?

I love being behind-the-scenes with Jack at the basketball games in Capital One Arena. He absolutely loves it, and his excitement right before his court appearances never gets old.
