Congratulations, Class of 2020! But I’m sure that doesn’t sound like enough. I graduated from Georgetown Law during the recession. I remember the day I was interviewing for a job in New York City and watched the ticker tape on Sixth Avenue report that Lehman Brothers had collapsed. My heart sank as the news reinforced how tough it would be to start a career at a really difficult time in the nation’s economic history. When I magnify the memory of that day, I get a glimpse of what your class is experiencing now. You have worked so hard. You’ve probably done nearly everything right. And now you are faced with uncertainty. In the midst of all the uncertainty, many of us adults are cheering you on, hoping to see you succeed, and knowing that your generation will develop the tools and strategies needed for us to become a better society. One that is resilient and capable of developing solutions to complex and global problems. You are wildly capable, and the world needs you. I hope you find ways to celebrate with family and friends and know that Georgetown alumni are backing you and rooting for you! Hoya Saxa!
