The university’s School of Continuing Studies will host a Summer Speaker Series on the 2014 World Cup beginning June 16. The series comprises three events exploring the intersection of politics, development and leadership in the world of sports. RSVP here.
Bryan McCann, associate professor of history and co-director of Georgetown’s Masters in Global, International, and Comparative History program is the author of several books on contemporary politics and culture in Brazil. He has published on the business and politics of sport in Brazil and on protests against the World Cup and the Olympics.
Marty Conway, adjunct lecturer in the Sports Industry Management program at the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), teaches courses on Sports Leadership, Management and Entrepreneurism, Sports Marketing Strategy and Sports Event and Facility Management, the Global Games and the Global Business of Sport. Conway was director of international business development for AOL when the company launched its service in Brazil.
Bobby Goldwater is the interim associate dean of the Sports Industry Management graduate program at SCS and has been an adjunct professor since the program’s inception six years ago. Goldwater has extensive venue and event management experience including with the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he served for 24 years in several executive capacities. Goldwater also served as the Los Angeles STAPLES Center’s first general manager.
Dr. Judith R.F. Kupersmith has devoted her 40-year career to helping performers and athletes triumph over the stresses, trials and tribulations that can accompany performances and competitions. Kupersmith says barriers that may seem trivial to non-performers can interfere tremendously with a performance or competition. Performance-related obstacles include paralyzing anxiety, eating disorders or career-ending injuries. Kupersmith is professor of clinical psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Jimmy Lynn, visiting assistant professor in the Sports Industry Management program, teaches sports marketing strategy and sports executive leadership at the McDonough School of Business He is a managing partner of JLynn Associates, a global strategic advisory firm for the sports, sports marketing and sports media industries. Lynn has traveled to Brazil extensively over the past seven years, including numerous meetings with the Confederation of Brazilian Football, the 2014 FIFA Rio World Cup Committee, the 2016 Brazil Olympic Committee and the Brazilian Ministry of Sport.
Dr. William Postma specializes in sports medicine with an emphasis on knee ligamentous reconstruction, shoulder arthroscopy and hip arthroscopy. Postma is an assistant professor of orthopedics at Georgetown University School of Medicine and serves as associate orthopedic surgeon for Georgetown University athletics.
Vivaldo A. Santos, associate professor of Spanish and Portuguese, director of the Portuguese program and director of Spanish undergraduate studies, is an expert on Portuguese and Brazilian culture, including soccer, music and cinema.
Charles Skuba is a professor of the practice in marketing and international business with expertise in international trade and international marketing strategy. Prior to coming to Georgetown, Skuba has chief of staff, market access and compliance, at the U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration. He also had a long career in international marketing as a senior executive at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising. He can discuss the value of sports sponsorhips and the World Cup, in particular, to marketers.
Dr. Allen J. Taylor can address fitness and cardiac performance, including adaptations to various forms of exercise. Taylor is a professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and chief of cardiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Dr. Joseph Verbalis is an expert on exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH), or water intoxication, which can cause death during endurance events. Verbalis is part of an expert group charged with understanding the biological basis of EAH to reduce athletes’ risk of death. Verbalis is vice-chairman of the department of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
