Hilltop Campus Groups

(Open to Students From All Campuses)

Please note: Unless otherwise stated, group days, times and formats (virtual or in-person) will be determined by group facilitators after meeting with interested participants. Some groups may require group screening. Please contact the group facilitators for more details.

Directions

Reservoir Road to CAPS: Throughout the remainder of the Henle Village construction project, pedestrians can enter through Pedestrian Entrance 00 on Reservoir Road NW, to the East of St Mary’s and Darnall Halls to lead to the CAPS. Please note: Off-campus students (including graduate students) who don’t have access to residence halls, need to enter via Reservoir Road.

Hilltop Campus to CAPS: Proceed down Tondorf Road toward Darnall Hall which is just before Epicurean. Gain entrance to Darnall Hall with a GoCard, head to the mezzanine level and exit, turning left toward the CAPS main door. Please note: Off-campus students (including graduate students) who don’t have access to residence halls, need to enter via Reservoir Road.

Understanding Self and Others Group
In-person, Weekly, Thursdays 1-2 p.m.
Facilitators: Andrew Park, Psy.D. and Ping-Chung Wong, M.Psy.

This insight-oriented group provides a safe environment for exploring yourself and your interpersonal style in areas such as trust, intimacy, anger, assertiveness, taking risks and dealing with authority. Global Threads-A Group for International Students at Hilltop
In-person, Weekly, Mondays 2-3 p.m.
Facilitators: Chao Song, Ph.D. and Colm Johnston, M.A.

This is a group for understanding self and others as an international student at the Hilltop Campus. The group is a safe and supportive environment for graduate and undergraduate international students and provides an opportunity to explore and process the unique experiences of being an international student in the U.S. Students may examine patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that are undermining their ability to enjoy their interpersonal lives and to achieve their goals. Through the group process, students may discover aspects of self, change interpersonal patterns, try new behaviors and learn new ways of navigating challenges. Survivors Support Group
Facilitators: Minu Mathew, LCSW, LICSW and Alex Huss, LCSW
In-person, Bi-weekly

This group is intended to create community and support survivors of interpersonal violence (sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and childhood sexual abuse) who are seeking to connect with others with similar experiences and gain insight into the ways trauma continues to affect them. This group will focus on the impact of traumatic experiences, the use of coping skills in managing symptoms and the connection of survivors in order to decrease isolation and promote personal empowerment. Group will follow an open format with topics discussed depending on the group’s interests and include brief mindfulness exercises. Trauma Recovery Group
Facilitators: Minu Mathew, LCSW, LICSW and Bradley Cameron, Psy.D.
Virtual, Weekly, Wednesdays 10-11:30 a.m.

This group is for survivors of interpersonal trauma or abuse who have achieved some control over posttraumatic symptoms and would like to work further on the impact of their trauma history on their present lives. This is designed as a 10-week goal-oriented group focusing on decreasing the impact of past trauma on current life through structured work on a specific aspect of recovery. Interpersonal Mindfulness Group (Virtual)
Facilitators: John Loughlin-Presnal, Ph.D. and Emily Dameron, M.A.
Weekly, Thursdays, 1-1:50 p.m.

This group is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in using mindfulness to increase self-acceptance and relate more comfortably to others. Sample topics include working with social anxiety, self-critical thoughts, mindful communication and present-centered awareness. Prior experience with mindfulness or meditation is welcome, but not a requirement for participation in this group. Screenings are required. This group is designed for graduate and undergraduate students who are interested in using mindfulness to increase self-acceptance and relate more comfortably to others. Sample topics include working with social anxiety, self-critical thoughts, mindful communication and present-centered awareness. Prior experience with mindfulness or meditation is welcome, but not a requirement for participation in this group. Screenings are required. Coping with Loss
Facilitators: Sarita Palmer, Ph.D., LCPC, LPC, NCC and Emily Dameron, M.A.
Virtual, Weekly, Fridays, 2-3 p.m. starting Jan. 31

This is a group for students who have experienced the loss of a family member, loved one or acquaintance, recently or unresolved from the past. It is designed to provide a confidential and supportive place to express and process feelings around coping with major losses and to provide support for adapting to new ways to build meaning after loss. Support Space for Neurodivergent Individuals
Facilitators: Jade Sanders, Ph.D. and Amber Pasha, M.A.
Virtual, Biweekly, Thursdays, 10-11 a.m.

This support space is open to undergraduate and graduate students who identify as neurodivergent (e.g. ADHD, Autism). This group aims to create a supportive peer environment to discuss experiences related to being neurodivergent, share coping skills and build community. Mosaic
Facilitator: Alyssa Alonso Ph.D.
Virtual, Biweekly, Wednesdays at 2-3 p.m. starting Feb. 19

This group is a support space for Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC)-identifying students to cultivate strength through solidarity and connection. Mosaic provides a place for group members to discuss issues unique to their experience at a predominantly white institution (PWI), including academic stress, relationships, race/ethnicity-related stress, cultural values and navigating cultural expectations, values exploration, family dynamics, identity development, building resilience, self-care and community care, among other topics. Queer Support Space

Virtual, Biweekly, Thursdays, 10-11 a.m. starting Feb. 6 

This group is a support space for undergraduate and graduate students who identify within the queer community. The group aims to provide a safe and confidential place for those looking to discuss topics like identity development, coming out, relationships, family dynamics and community/university concerns unique to queer students. Trans and Non-Binary Support Space

This group is a support space for undergraduate and graduate students who identify as trans and non-binary. The group aims to provide a safe and confidential place for those looking to discuss topics like gender identity and expression, coming out, relationships, family dynamics and community/university concerns unique to trans and non-binary folks. Body Image and Eating Concerns Support Group

In-person, Weekly, Fridays 11 a.m.-12 p.m. starting Jan. 31

The Body Image and Eating Disorder Support group will provide a safe and supportive space for students to discuss and address their challenges related to body image and eating disorders as they navigate campus life. Together, we will share personal experiences, develop practical coping strategies and foster self-acceptance through group discussions, skill-building exercises, nutrition education and peer support. Back on the Hilltop Support Group

Virtual, Biweekly, Thursdays 2-3 p.m. — Jan. 30, Feb. 13, Feb. 27, March 13, March 27, April 10 and April 24

“Back on the Hilltop” is designed for college students returning from a medical leave of absence, personal leave or students who have recently transferred to GU. This group provides a safe and supportive environment to navigate the transition to campus life at GU. We will address and problem-solve challenges related to mental health, academics and social reintegration through guided discussions, skill-building practices and peer support. Group members will engage in activities centered around time management, mindfulness, stress management and more to build resilience and ensure success in their academic journeys at Georgetown. Emotionally Regulated — A DBT-based Skills Group
Facilitators: Nisha Molugu, Psy.D. and Amber Pasha, M.A.
In-person, Weekly, Tuesdays 2-3 p.m. for six weeks starting Feb. 11

Do you struggle to manage your emotions? Do you often feel like you find yourself emotionally distressed or dysregulated? Have you been wanting more tools and skills to manage your emotions better? You’re not alone! This Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) based group is designed to teach practical tools and skills for emotion regulation over six weeks. This group will center around topics like understanding your emotions, accumulating positive emotions, changing unwanted emotions and taking care of your mind and body. School of Medicine Groups

Wellness Wednesdays
Facilitator: Kortney Sumner, LICSW, MPH
In-person, monthly starting in January

This is a drop-in support group intended for students in the School of Medicine. It meets once a month and is designed to provide a safe space for students to process their experiences as they navigate medical school. Athletics Groups

Injury Recovery Enhancement Group
Facilitators: Erica Force, Ph.D. and Andrew Park, Psy.D.
In-person, Thursdays 4-5 p.m., Biweekly starting Jan. 30

This group offers space for student-athletes in any stage of injury recovery seeking support as they cope with sport-related injury and the challenges of being away from their sport during recovery. The focus will be on supporting student-athletes through wellness and connection. The group will offer a space for connection with peers while supporting student-athletes with identifying goals for injury rehabilitation, rebuilding and maintaining motivation, applying stress management techniques and feeling more prepared to return to sport, or in some cases, prepared to transition out of sport. More Than A Game: A Black Student-Athlete Support Group

This group offers a space for authentic discussions around Black student-athlete experiences on the Hilltop. Centering the narratives of Black student-athletes on the Hilltop, the biweekly “More than a Game” group strives to offer an honest and transparent space for authentic discussions around their unique student experiences on the Hilltop. Building Brotherhood

This group is designed to be a space for men currently enrolled at the Law Center to give and receive support regarding their mental health. This space offers the opportunity to build community and fortify your resilience to the stressors in and out of law school. Students interested in attending this virtual space are also welcome to stop by the CAPS office to pick up and take home personal building block sets that will be incorporated into this support space.
