Georgetown condemns acts of violence in Iran and efforts to suppress the voices of those fighting for women’s rights, gender equity and freedom of expression.
Georgetown President John J. DeGioia has written to members of the Georgetown community who have expressed concerns over the situation in Iran and shared his support for members of the Iranian and Iranian-American communities.
“As a global institution committed to the common good, our University stands in support of those around the world fighting for justice, freedom and equity,” DeGioia wrote. “I wish to express my sincere support to the members of our Iranian and Iranian-American community here on campus during this very difficult and tumultuous time.”

“Over the last three months of protest and civil unrest in Iran, members of our University community have expressed their serious concern about the disregard for human rights and grief for the loss of human life. The actions taken against peaceful protestors are deeply disturbing. Earlier this semester, I had the opportunity to participate in an event organized by Georgetown’s Institute for Women, Peace, and Security that highlighted the fight for human rights taking place in Iran, and I know many of our colleagues have been contributing their voices and their expertise to our understanding of this moment.
As a global institution committed to the common good, our University stands in support of those around the world fighting for justice, freedom, and equity. The circumstances in Iran, which the White House has described as ‘suppress[ing] the aspirations of successive generations through intimidation, coercion, and violence,’ call us to solidarity with those seeking basic rights and freedoms. We condemn these acts of violence and efforts which seek to suppress the voices of those fighting for women’s rights, gender equity, and freedom of expression.
Across Iran and beyond, young people, colleagues at Iranian academic institutions, and many others have demonstrated incredible courage in response to these challenges. Many in our community are deeply involved and deeply affected by this moment. I wish to express my sincere support to the members of our Iranian and Iranian-American community here on campus during this very difficult and tumultuous time.”
