Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, who previously taught at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service (SFS), returns as a Distinguished Executive-in-Residence at Georgetown.

Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, who previously taught at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service (SFS) from 2009 to 2013, has rejoined the university.
Hagel was the 24th United States Secretary of Defense from February 2013 through February of this year, and spent two terms in the U.S. Senate representing Nebraska, from 1997 to 2009. He was the first Vietnam Veteran and combat enlisted person to serve as Secretary of Defense.
He will serve as Distinguished Executive-in-Residence at Georgetown, where he will provide expertise to the university community across schools, give guest lectures and meet with faculty and students.
“We are so pleased to welcome Secretary Hagel back to Georgetown,” said Georgetown President John J. DeGioia. “We look forward to engaging his perspective as we work across our university to deepen our understanding of important global issues.”
While a senator, Hagel was a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations, Banking and Intelligence Committees. He also chaired the Senate Global Climate Change Observer Group and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.
“I’m looking forward to renewing my association with Georgetown and helping a great institution continue its important work preparing our next generation of leaders,” Hagel says.
A graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Hagel is the author ofAmerica: Our Next Chapter LP: Tough Questions, Straight Answers(HarperCollins, 2008),and was the subject of a 2006 book by Charlyne Berens titled,Chuck Hagel: Moving Forward.
