Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,
We are reaching out to provide updates on the utility replacement project on Healy and Copley Lawn. This three-year project involves replacing aging underground utilities with more energy-efficient infrastructure.
We encourage you to explore our landing page to learn more about the project plan, benefits and the upcoming site improvements. This project is part of Georgetown’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship.
The current phase (Phase 1) will expand to sections of Copley Lawn on Monday, September 23, which is earlier than previously communicated, in order to ensure scheduled completion.
Expanded Phase 1: Healy Circle & Copley Lawn
Duration: September 2024 – November 2024
In addition to the current fenced-in section of Healy Circle, two sections of Copley Lawn will be closed for construction. The diagonal sidewalk through Copley Lawn will be modified temporarily during this phase. The sidewalk in front of the patio of White-Gravenor Hall will be closed. Modifications will be made to maintain ADA accessibility across Copley Lawn and into and around White-Gravenor.
The fenced-in section of Healy Circle will reopen at the completion of this phase.
Phase 2: Copley Lawn & Old North Way
November 2024 – April 2025
During Phase 2, the two sections of Copley Lawn will remain closed, and a section of Old North Way between Healy and Copley Halls will be closed, with a designated pathway for pedestrians to pass through.
Tree Removal
As a part of this project, six trees on Copley Lawn will need to be removed. These removals are being performed under the close supervision of a professional arborist. In the spirit of sustainability, we will harvest four of these trees and repurpose them for alternative use. New trees will be planted during the site improvements phase of the project.
Construction Impacts
Construction hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Construction will adhere to quiet periods of reduced noise during the hours of 7-8 a.m., Monday through Friday, 7-9 a.m. on Saturdays, and during study days and final exams. Noise may be heard during construction hours in nearby buildings.
Construction vehicles will access the work area from the main entrance at 37th and O St. Pedestrian pathways can be found on the campus map. Measures will continue to be taken to promote pedestrian safety.
