Dear Georgetown University Community Members,
We are writing to update you on several ongoing projects on our Hilltop Campus.
Red Square Willow Oak Tree Removal
The willow oak tree in Red Square is in decaying condition and needs to be removed. A Tree Risk Assessment Report was prepared by a certified arborist, resulting in a recommended tree removal.
We plan to remove the tree over Thanksgiving break from November 29-30 in order to minimize disruptions to our community.
During the two days of tree removal, the south half of Red Square will be closed off and the surrounding area where the tree was removed will be barricaded by fencing slightly larger than the existing wall around the tree. This fencing will be in place until a new tree can be replanted in December (over the winter break). We plan to relocate the Beech tree from Healy Lawn to the circular planting bed in Red Square.
We recognize the importance and nostalgia of this tree to our community and are sad to see it go. We invite our community to attend the Prayer in Thanksgiving for the Red Square Oak Tree with Campus Ministry on Monday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
We expect to salvage wood from the willow oak for future use.
Healy and Copley Lawn Project
On Tuesday, November 12, Phase 2 of the Healy and Copley Lawn project will begin. During Phase 2, two sections of Copley Lawn will remain closed, and a section of Old North Way between Healy and Copley Halls will be closed, with a designated pathway for pedestrians to pass through. Please visit the landing page to learn more about this next phase. The fenced-in section of Healy Circle is scheduled to reopen at the end of November, weather permitting.
Redevelopment of the Former Henle Village
A tower crane on the construction site is scheduled for removal on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Expect pedestrian detours along Tondorf Road to the sidewalk at the Verstandig Pavilion, through Thanksgiving weekend. Traffic control flaggers will be in place at all crossings.
