The investment head of the foundation that supports Maryland’s public higher education system will become Georgetown’s next Chief Investment Officer (CIO) in June.

Michael Barry is currently CIO for the University System of Maryland Foundation (USMF), where he is responsible for the investment of endowment and operating funds on behalf of the 11 member universities that invest with the foundation’s investment office, as well as eight nonprofit institutions in the state of Maryland.
CRITICAL TIME

As CIO at Georgetown, Barry will oversee the university’s management of investment portfolios, including endowment assets, trusts and operating funds. He will also manage an investment office with an experienced team of investment and operational support professionals.
VITAL EXPERIENCE

Barry started the USMF Investment Office in 2003. Prior to his arrival at the foundation, Barry served as a senior research associate at Cambridge Associates, one of the nation’s leading investment consulting firms.
CHARITABLE TIES
Georgetown’s new CIO is also an advisory board member of No Greater Sacrifice, a national charity that provides college scholarships for the children of fallen and wounded soldiers.
He serves on the investment committees for the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He also serves on the investment committee for the France-Merrick Foundation in Baltimore, MD.
Barry holds a B.A. in philosophy from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn., and became a Chartered Financial Analyst in 2005.
He has completed coursework toward a master’s degree in international public policy at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. Barry lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and young daughter.
