Title: New Student Center, Roadwork Among Major Summer Construction
Dahlgren Chapel, the new Healey Family Student Center and roadwork near the Leavey Center are among the construction and repair projects set for this summer.
Construction on campus this summer ranges from building the new Healey Family Student Center to roadwork near the Leavey Center, according to the Office of Planning and Facilities Management.
“Summer does give us an opportunity to do some work that we normally wouldn’t be able to do during the academic year,” says Robin Morey, vice president for planning facilities management.
Some projects may require road closures and detours that may affect pedestrian and vehicular traffic on campus.
Morey wants to alert the campus community about projects that may cause changes to transportation routines as well as keep the community abreast of improvements and new developments.
Construction on the new student center, which will be located within New South residence hall, begins this month, and Morey says all members of the community affected by the construction will be notified. The student center is scheduled to open in the fall with a pub, café, dance studio and other features.
The most significant construction people may notice on campus is the roadwork between the Leavey Center and the Pasquerilla Health Center, Morey says.
“That requires a lot of excavation and a lot of dump trucks coming in and out of that tight space,” Morey says. “Parking will still be accessible, but there will be traffic diversions.”
Construction began June 17 and will last for about 10 weeks.
Other major summer projects include:
Elevator modernization in Maguire Hall: Work began this month and will be completed in early August. The handicap route to Healy and Maguire will be available via the Healy Hall elevator, which may be accessed through the Dahlgren Quadrangle.
Dahlgren Chapel: The interior work begins on Dahlgren Chapel now that exterior construction nears completion. Interiorrenovationsinclude new seating, lighting and other architectural improvements. Updates on the renovation and location changes for Masses can be found on the Campus Ministry website. The work is scheduled for completion this winter.
