“I’m very proud of the effort of both teams, and we’re grateful we’ve had the opportunity to compete at a high level and to finish strongly,” says Alton McKenzie, director of track and field/cross country. “The effort we put in was exceptional as was the performance.”
The women tallied a score of 46, edging out their BIG EAST rivals, University of Connecticut, for the second-consecutive competition.
“It’s overwhelming to think of all of the staff that put effort into something like this happening in normal times, let alone right now,” says Mitchell Baker, assistant coach track and field. “University officials, senior sport administrators, sports medicine, academic support, equipment, facilities, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports psych, compliance, we thank them all.”
The men’s squad finished the afternoon with 52 points, 17 points behind champions Butler University and two points clear of Villanova University.
“I’m incredibly proud of how our men raced in their first race of the season. The preparation was far from perfect but they went out and ran incredibly tough team races,” says Brandon Bonsey, men’s cross country coach. “Butler and Villanova are two of the best men’s teams in the country, so for us to do what we did with a very young group was super exciting.”
The Hoya women and men will next compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma on March 15.
“I’m very pleased with the effort and proud of the coaching staff – Coach Mitchell Baker and Brandon Bonsey,” McKenzie adds.
