NEARLY 20,000 STUDENTS VYING for about 1,580 spots applied to Georgetown this year for the Class of 2017.
The university admitted 3,293 students for an admission rate of 16.6 percent, a similar selectivity rate as last year.
“We knew early on this was going to be an exceptional class,” says Charles Deacon, dean of admissions. “Admission committee members were very pleased to see that the applicant pool continued to be both academically strong as well as increasingly diverse.”
Students have until May 1 to accept enrollment.
NEED-BLIND ADMISSIONS
Georgetown’s need-blind admissions policy guarantees that eligible students are admitted without regard to their ability to pay.
Under the policy, students with demonstrated financial need are able to attend the university through a mixture of scholarships, grants, work-study and loans.
“Need-blind admission policies are a core value of our university,” Deacon says. “The Georgetown Scholarship Program, the 1789 Imperative, and current initiatives to raise both endowed and current-use funds for financial aid are critical.”
INTELLIGENT AND DIVERSE
The average admitted student for the Class of 2017 is in the top 3.6 percent of his or her high school class. The middle 50 percent range of accepted students’ SAT Critical Reading score was 680-760, with the math portion at 680-770.
Nearly 50 percent of the applicant pool came from multicultural backgrounds, including 13 percent Asian American, 11 percent Hispanic, 8 percent African American, 11 percent foreign nationals and 6 percent multiracial.
Admitted students represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 69 countries.
EARLY ACTION
The university offers a nonbinding Early Action program that lets students know if they are admitted by December 15.
A total of 6,840 students applied for Early Action admission for the 2017 class, with 882 admitted and the rest deferred. The acceptance rate for Early Action students was 12.9 percent, compared to last year’s 14.7 percent.
Admitted student weekends have continued throughout the spring, with one in March for Early Action students and two set in April.
About 400 students attend each weekend session, which offers accepted students the opportunity to sit in on classes, meet current students and explore Georgetown and its surrounding community.
