Title: Update on Reiss Science Building 4th Floor Construction and Hazardous Material Abatement

Dear Reiss Building Occupants,

This past October, we shared about planned hazardous material abatement as part of construction to renovate the 4th floor of the Reiss Science Building. That work has been rescheduled to begin on or around February 17, 2023 due to contractor scheduling.

All work will be performed during the evening/early morning hours of 5 p.m. – 7 a.m., and is expected to be completed by May 30, 2023. Construction noise should be expected on and near the 4th floor during the first two weeks of work, but no significant noise is anticipated afterwards.

The contractor completing this work, which the university has successfully worked with on other campus hazardous material abatement and removal projects, will perform routine abatement work in accordance with the health and safety requirements as described by OSHA, EPA and the District of Columbia.

We have worked closely with the Office of Environmental Health & Safety to identify all hazardous materials in the work area for safe removal. Per our regular best practices, the work area will be tented and monitored, including any access points to the ventilation system. During the hazardous-material abatement, a “negative air” machine draws potentially contaminated air across a series of filters, with a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, to remove any hazardous fibers and dusts. In addition to ongoing visual monitoring and periodic air sampling, there will be a third-party industrial hygienist involved to monitor the process and also conduct final clearance sampling.

The hazardous material removal work is part of a broader renovation project to convert a section of the 4th floor into a hoteling workspace.
