Title: Staying Safe This Halloween Weekend

Dear Students,

We are writing to inform you of several safety reminders ahead of the upcoming Halloween weekend.

Please remain aware of your surroundings and use safety best practices when traveling through the neighborhood and city. Please also be considerate of our neighbors and the directions of our Student Neighborhood Assistance Program (SNAP) team.

  • Be Aware and Vigilant. Never walk alone at night, and always walk along well-lit and well-traveled routes. Take earbuds out of your ears, and keep your attention on your surroundings rather than your phone. Please be considerate of community members, and keep your voices down and your behavior respectful as you move through the residential neighborhoods.
  • Tailgating/Building Security: Please pay particular attention to the issue of “tailgating,” in which residents knowingly or unknowingly allow unauthorized individuals to pass through GOCard-accessed entrances with them or behind them. Lock your residence doors, both on and off campus, even if you’re home.
  • Use the LiveSafe Mobile App. LiveSafe is a personal security system that connects users with GUPD/DPS when activated during an emergency situation. The app also allows users to report suspicious activity, request a SafeRide Shuttle or safety escort, access resources on emergency preparedness and use SafeWalk to share their location with friends.
  • Students must follow all aspects of the Code of Student Conduct (“the Code”) at all times; please note students are responsible for the actions of their guests. Violations of the Code, both on and off campus, will be taken seriously. Failure to comply with a reasonable directive of a university official, or law enforcement officer performing their duties is a violation of the Code. You are responsible for the behaviors of any individual(s) you allow access to your on-campus space, off-campus residence, or access to campus. If a guest at your residence or property causes harm to another person or property or otherwise violates the Code, you may be held responsible.

Emergency Contacts

  • Hilltop Campus Emergency Contact: Call GUPD at (202) 687-4343.
  • Capitol Campus Emergency Contact: Call DPS at (202) 662-9325.
  • If off-campus, call 911.

You can find many on-campus events sponsored by the Georgetown Program Board.

Please contact GUPD at police@georgetown.edu or (202) 687-4343 with any questions.

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

Sincerely,
