Editor’s Note:

Many students come to Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) when they experience life events or academic pressures that leave them feeling anxious, confused, lonely, angry, depressed or overwhelmed. When those feelings persist for more than just a few days, it is often helpful to speak with an unbiased, objective professional. Some students come only for consultation about how to help a friend or family member. Any personal issue that is troubling a student may be discussed in counseling. The number for CAPS during business hours is 202-687-6958 and their offices are located in the back of Darnall Hall.

Dear freshman me,

This is one of the hardest years you will face. You’ll suffer from depression. But, you’ll find out that you have the strength to find the help you need. You’ll also find amazing friends on your freshman floor who help you through everything. You’ll get involved in something on the other side of campus and you’ll have a purpose. TAKE THE RANDOM CLASS. What you don’t know now is that art history that you take for fun will become a passion. You’ll find yourself at museums instead of your bed alone and you’ll switch your major and intern at amazing museums other people dream of having access to. Be a good friend. Be there for people and forgive people when they mess up because your friends now are still your friends after graduation and they’re the first people you put on the invite list to your wedding at Georgetown. You’ll love it here because you can make your path and grow so so much. Good luck!!

Best,

Beth
